Training Description: Across the country, Continuums of Care are seeing growing numbers of people experiencing homelessness who speak little or no English; including immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and long-time community members whose primary language has never been English. For the staff who serve them — intake coordinators, outreach workers, housing navigators, case managers, and shelter staff — language barriers are no longer an occasional challenge. In this interactive training, you will gain a clear understanding of your legal obligations, learn how to work effectively with professional interpreters in every setting, explore culturally responsive and trauma-informed communication strategies, and practice navigating real-world language barrier scenarios drawn from homeless response system work. You will leave with concrete skills, a resource packet you can use immediately, and a personal action plan for strengthening language access in your own role and organization.
